If you are reading this, you may be already a statistics. But there are worse statistics than this to belong to: job or property loss, separation from family, debilitation or death. If I were you, I would fight like hell to keep my name off the second list. But no matter, even if you are already jobless, penniless, homeless, and separated from family and friends. It is a hard fight regardless, a terrible brawl, rather unimaginable for most people, to fight against oneself. Truth be told, to fight simultaneously against one’s mind and body is quite something else. In other words, that the disease as well as the cure is inside the same person constitutes a curious predicament. It is also a challenge because what is to be given up, jettisoned, or abandoned is a source of so much pleasure. Extrinsic means have been used to derive intrinsic pleasure by fooling the mind. It is almost like the opposite of auto-immune disease where the target becomes the body itself and a source of immense pain. Yet such battles have to be fought, and this war, won. People have done it, taking it to be a good fight. They have made it to the other side by scores to tell their story. You could do the same by converting adversity into opportunity when you rise from a challenged, lonely, hopeless, pained, resigned, ashamed, impoverished, in denial, disheveled, disoriented, disconnected, sometimes disowned, lowly status to a far higher, glowing station of courage, patience, fortitude, forbearance, fulfillment, awestruck rediscovery, thankfulness, and been-there and done-that maturity and wisdom.

The Ominous Statistics

  • Almost 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, yet only 10% of them receive treatment. 1
  • About 20% of Americans with depression or an anxiety disorder also have a substance abuse disorder.
  • More than 90% of addicts began drinking or using drugs before reaching 18 years of age.
  • 2017: 34.2m Americans committed DUI: 21.4m alcohol & 12.8m drug users.

Genesis This may have begun as a dare or as an act of bravado, a source of fun and relief, through occasional casual forays, a method for filling a vacuum, as a means to drown out fear, sorrow, misery and frustration, an attempt to fulfill unusual and high expectation, and as an outcome of frozen adolescence. It may have started young through early, accelerated exposure brought on in the presence of adults or by their liberal ways – relatives, friends, acquaintances, mentors and strangers. It may have arrived in a bottle, a pill, a smoke or an injection, a magazine, via TV or internet. It may have been bred casually, foolishly or deliberately through loose talk, via voyeurism, by witnessing adult carry-ons and adult on adult abuse, being a victim of abuse by an older person, having been denied proper adult supervision and care, having been misguided about right and wrong, fair and unfair, kind and harsh, proper and improper, timely and untimely, and patience and impatience, or by being full of oneself and given to arrogance.

Defining Addiction Pursued for the pure pleasure it produces, it is a persistent, obsessive, all-engrossing, over-riding, habit-forming compulsive behavior involving chemical, financial, physical, or psychic/astrological/superstitious choices that are mindlessly pursued oftentimes infringing values - ethics, morals, codes and laws, endangering normal activities, personal responsibilities and relationships, and even life itself, while producing shame, denial, isolation and resignation, and causing God-remembrance and gratitude to be, at best, marginalized.

Prolonged Struggle Addiction is an intense confrontation, a prolonged struggle. It is up and down and every way around battle of wit and stamina to stand up to addiction. No matter how one has entered this diabolic space, it is critical to recognize that the real game of choice starts now. For some, the choice of the past was done in the fog of ignorance and foolishness. So, it was not a real choice but a self-entrapment. For others, it was misfortune brought on by treacherous, heartless circumstance. This disease does not work itself out following a fever or two, no antibiotic leaves a mark, no vaccination would have preempted it, and no Ayurvedic, Homeopathic, or Allopathic intervention, except sometimes as emergency response, will make much of a lasting dent.

Relief Addiction relief is a matter likely of constant vigilance for anyone who has been in its grip. Relapse can be an ever-present foe. However, a once-for-all addiction relief lies in exploring what is best out there that never took root or has gone missing for a long time in ourselves: our spirit infused with and lifted by a Greater Spirit as well as ethics, morality, inclusiveness and mercy emanating from that One Source. The modern existential options that have led us so far have miserably failed us. For a unified, unfailing meaning of life, we truly need to closely connect ourselves with the ever-present, fully aware, latent, as yet unrecognized, unexplored, ignored, disrespected Higher Being. For this end, as a matter of broader principle, the mind must intend to escape the jailhouse and we must be willing to take little steps changing our choices and behaviors on a consistent basis until we can pick up pace. Early on, one has to admit being struck out of one’s own folly and that help is badly needed.

Nothing is Impossible Gathering together whatever bits of energy is left to turn a new page is not easy. It feels heavy. It appears impossible. Giving up seems to be the only practical response. But no one knows until one’s back is against the wall that even in a spent condition how incredible a storehouse one is of residual spirit, common sense and physical strength. It is an awesome blessing that should fill us with happiness that not all is lost. Led into a blind alley of darkness and maze in a blinding storm, this residual can easily tide us over. Surely, every flame begins with a daring spark followed by a hopeful flicker. The roar and the crackle are but a couple of huffs and puffs and a few twigs and logs away. Live and love for many, many blessed seasons to come to tell your story so as not to regale but to protect or rescue others. To note, clambering out of a man-made, self-perpetuating disaster zone belongs, by its own merit and right, to another category of statistics: the glorious one. Drug Use Disorder

Drug Addiction originates in habitually consuming hard drugs [i.e., illegal or controlled substance without prescription]. Entering the body variously [via drinking, smoking and inhaling, snorting, smelling, injecting, inserting, etc.] for the express intention of gaining pure pleasure and relaxation it produces, in the long run it reveals itself to be the Trojan horse it is. It is an induced/acquired mental (i.e., psychological and emotional) and physical disease.
