Statistics on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction 1

  • Binge drinking is a pattern of drinking that brings blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels to 0.08 g/dL. This typically occurs after 4 drinks for women and 5 drinks for men—in about 2 hours.
  • 2015: 26.9 % of those 18 or older reported engaging in binge drinking in the past month.
  • SAMHSA 4 defines heavy alcohol use as binge drinking on 5 or more days in the past month.
  • 2015: 7.0 % of those 18 or older reported heavy alcohol use in the past month

Family and Economic Burden

  • 2012 study: More than 10% of U.S. children live with a parent with alcohol problems.
  • 2010, US: Alcohol misuse cost the country $249.0 billion.
  • 2000, US estimate: 88,000 deaths from AUD (men to women, 62,000:26,000) – 3rd leading cause of PD 5.
  • 2014: 9,967 deaths due to alcohol-impaired driving (31% of overall driving deaths).
